Karawo Mahkuta

Meanings:

Mahkuta refers to Gorontalo’s traditional crown. This Karawo embroidery motif represents noble characters of leaders and good wishes for the wearer to be a useful person in society. It also indicates that a man or a husband must have a high position as a leader and be gentle to the weak.

Batik Karawo Production Process in Gorontalo

Batik production can take 1 month up to 2 years of working time depending on the purposes of the textile creation and the colour complexity. The Batik handwriting textile is generally made with 8 design steps, ranging from wax patterning to colouring process. The artists use Canting, as a tool to put hot melted wax on the cloth.

Overview of Gorontalo Province

Gorontalo City is one of the old cities in Sulawesi besides Makassar City, Pare-pare and Manado. This city was the center of education and trade thanks to its strategic location that is near Tomini Bay and the Sulawesi Sea in the ancient time. Some of the traditional arts are Dana-Dana dance, Dulohupa traditional house, and Gorontalo traditional clothing.
