Pisang Bali

Bali Province - Indonesia

Meanings:

In Balinese society, bananas or ‘pisang’ is a symbol of Amartha or the Waters of Eternity in Wiswa Ongkara (number 3 in Balinese numerological philosophy). Another version indicates that the words ‘pisang Bali’ are derived from the Javanese words ‘pisan’ (‘again’) and ‘bali’ (‘to return’), which together means ‘constantly returning’ or ‘repeating’. Therefore, this batik motif is usually given by a person to his/her lover who is travelling away, in a hope that s/he will return safely. It is also a reminder of the ever-returning waters of immortality, i.e. that we are constantly reincarnated and returning according to our life cycles.
