Sampurasun the Bandung Local Brand with the Heritage Storytelling

 Bandung city is one of Indonesia’s vibrant cultural cities that was designated as UNESCO creative city in 2015.  Located in West Java province, this city enchants all travellers with the richness of its creative resources, ranging from fashion, culinary, souvenirs, art exhibitions etc. One of its local designers, Mr. Anton Arifin, together with local creative producers, create an initiative to design and produce authentic Bandung souvenirs. Inspired by the local cultural expression of Sundanese tribe, they launched a heritage brand called Sampurasun in 2019. Its products are ranging from Tote bags, backpack, and wallet that are designed according to Bandung iconic culture, folklore, and art performances. Bright colour, ergonomic, affordable price, and unique design are the selling points of these unique souvenirs.

The unique features and philosophy of Sampurasun brand leads it becomes one of the sought-after products in Bandung. Its philosophy is to revive the memory of young generations towards the almost-forgotten intagible cultural heritage and genuine folklores existing in West Java through compelling visual storytelling. In a unique and engaging way, he reillustrates several cultural art scenes of Bandung city such as Kabayan figure, Jaipong dance, Angklung the UNESCO intangible cultural heritage in 2010, Surabi Oncom, Rampak Kendang traditional music, etc. 

Mr. Anton Arifin asserts that his bag products are designed with genuine creativity of Bandung youth community. Batik is a textile-making tradition in Indonesia that was inscribed by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2009.

iWareBatik is a digital platform that is designed to showcase and communicate the exceptional cultural values of Batik tradition that is protected by UNESCO as the legacy of humanity.

The online platform serves to help international and Indonesian Batik stakeholders to identify the variety of Batik textiles, philosophical values behind the motif, its place of origin, and useful information about local producers. Since Batik characterises the culture of each region in Indonesia, iWareBatik platform also features information about Indonesian tourism overview related to Batik in 34 provinces across Indonesia.

The Artificial Intelligence machine learning provides a new learning experience to reveal the hidden past of the Batik motifs using the Batik Recognition Tool in the mobile app.
